Edward Stanley Gover, 47, was shot six times by two deputies outside his girlfriend’s home.
“He had made multiple threats that he was going to kill her,” Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said.
According to Knezovich,Gover stabbed his girlfriend, held her against her will and stole her car.
Deputies found Gover in the backyard of his girlfriend’s home.
“He went to deputies and told them ‘You’re going to have to kill me,’” Knezovich said.
Gover said he had a weapon, reached in his pocket and put an object behind his back. Deputies opened fire on Gover not knowing what was in his hand.
Deputies discovered a set of keys in Gover’s hand after he fell to the ground.
“Deputies don’t know what kind of weapon he had,” Znezovich said. “It was a lethal force situation.”
Gover was by one deputy five times. Another deputy shot Gover once with a shotgun. He died at a Washington State hospital.
The Spokane County District Attorney’s Office will review the case to determine if excessive force was used.
