The accident happened just before 5:00 p.m. at the intersection of 700 East and 900 South.
Lt. Josh Scharman with the Salt Lake City Police Department said witnesses described seeing the bicyclist crossing 700 East. They think the biker ran a red light, causing a car with the right of way to hit him.
The collision left a visible impact on the car’s windshield and the bicyclist’s shoes and hat were thrown on the street.
Scharman said it is too soon to know if the biker is at fault. The victim is in his 20’s and is in critical condition at a local hospital.
Salt Lake City is considered a bicycle friendly city and the accident is a reminder to remember the rules of the road.
“We'd like to remind people whether you're driving a car or a bike that traffic laws apply to everyone,” Scharman said. “Red lights and stops signs apply to vehicles as well as bicyclists.”
It is unclear if the bicyclist will be cited for the accident.
